Rotary celebrates 2nd Global Handwashing Day in Baesa



The second annual Global Handwashing Day was celebrated in more than 80 countries on October 15, 2009. In Quezon City, Philippines, Rotary International District 3780, together with the Rotary Club of Talipapa, Maynilad Water, USAID, AECOM and Barangay Council of Baesa led the Global Handwashing Day celebration at Lucas R. Pascual Elementary School Baesa Quezon City.

USAID Grantee, Chief of Party Mrs. Lisa Kircher Lumbao and RI D3780 First Lady Governor Dulce dB Coyukiat with 3H Grant Subcommittee Chairman CP Jun Sanchez(RC Commonwealth) and Hands-On President Froilan Gonzales Villa-Real organized the event last October 15, 2009.

Maynilad donated six (6) water drinking and handwashing area through their President Rogelio Singson and Corporate Social Responsibility Head Ms. Risse Jose.

The successful event was also attended by guests coming from the Quezon City Health Office led by Dr. Rowell B. Romulo and staff who actually demonstrated the proper hand washing technique along with a jingle-slogan. Governor Dulce Coyukiat delivered a lively inspirational message to the grade school students (grade 1-3) associating the proper hand washing with a "Happy Birthday" song. The grade school students were delighted by the presence of Maynilad's mascot "TUBEE".

The event was highlighted by the blessing and actual handwashing at the newly constructed drinking and hand washing area donated by Maynilad. The ribbon cutting led by President Singson (Maynilad) was joined by Gov Dulce, Aecom's Lisa Kircher Lumbao (USAID Grantee), Ms. Adela Salvador (LRPES Principal), RCT Pres. Teng Villa-Real and Brgy. Baesa Capt. Edward Juan.

The LRPES drum and lyre group provided the event a festive mood, spiced up by dance numbers of LRPES selected grade school students.

Others who joined the occasion were the Rotary Community Corps of Talipapa, Rotaract Club of Talipapa as well as the Rotarians of Talipapa led by CP Roger Juan.
